Drivers are software files, usually written in binary mode that allows the operating system to interact with the hardware and respond to requests from it. With new hardware components being developed daily, the need to develop new instructions to keep the communication up to date is necessary for smooth functioning of the hardware component.
Often, the hardware comes with software drivers already installed, or with an accompanying CD-ROM to be installed on set up. However, in the case of a driver update, finding the right driver that is compatible with the hardware will involve external sources.
One of the best places to get drivers and driver updates is the internet. All driver updates are usually offered at no charge. Sometimes though, some refurbished computers and clones may not have a specific site from where drivers can be purchased. Some of these drivers may also not come with the operating system if the hardware was developed after the OS or was not popular at the time of the manufacture of the operating system. In such cases, one may need to do some searching on the internet. Furthermore, a hardware component may be known on the market but may not have an FCC number. In most cases however, computers sold in the United States and their components must have passed the FCC test for electronic emissions. This number can then be used to track down the manufacturer. All one does is enter the first 3 digits of the FCC ID number in a given website and it will search and reveal the manufacturer, the hardware component and other necessary details that can help track the drivers for the hardware. However, some hardware cards, especially those manufactured in Asian countries may not be required to have the manufacturer’s details on them.
In most cases however, the hardware component will have the manufacturer’s name and the user need only visit the manufacturer’s website to get the necessary drivers. This is usually the best way to get the compatible driver since the software files are usually updated frequently. When doing a Google search for the driver, one will usually find a list of websites offering software drivers. Some of these websites can harm the computer. If the file information looks suspicious or the file information cannot be fully understood, it is wise not to open or save the file. It is also important to look at the driver version for compatibility.
